Title
SS Florence. American Steam Vessels on the Great Lakes - 1897 - SS Florence - owned by Captain John Poisson, Grand Rapids [Reeds Lake]
Description
The Steamship Florence was built in Grand Haven, Michigan in 1869. It was purchased by Captain John Honore Poisson in 1882. The original steel-hulled 54 foot boat was single decked. In 1890 a second deck was added:
Gross tonnage: 26; net tonnage: 13; Keel/Beam: 71 x 14
Poisson purchased it for his business venture first to operate between Grand Rapids and Grand Haven. When that plan failed, Poisson had the Florence moved to Reeds Lake, a small inland lake 3.5 miles from Grand Rapids. Reeds Lake, a known popular resort, worked well for his fleet of steamers. The first being the Florence.
